Young Guns | For the classicists and the geeks alike, an incredible collection
About the SessionWhat is a Young Gun?
A talented winemaker who pushes the boundaries, breaks the rules and creates cutting-edge wines with personality and energy. Young Guns either work, or have worked for notable estates, but also produce unique wines under their own labels. They are dynamic, working together in pushing the envelope and promoting brand SA. They are the winemakers who should be on your radar as they are making some of the most daring, innovative, and simply delicious wines in SA. They travel and taste extensively, drawing inspiration from the classics through to the more edgy, hip styles and techniques, from the profound and obscure wine regions of the world. And then they apply their own creative interpretations on home soil, often searching for unique vineyard sites, cultivars and old vines. The results are most often small in numbers and high in demand, selling out on release. They are the rising stars, the future icons and ultimately, tomorrow’s investment wines.

About this Item
Van Loggerenberg Wines was started by Lukas and wife Roxanne with their first vintage in 2016. The 2020 vintage is the fifth release for Lukas – a rising star, Young Gun and 2018 Young Winemaker of the Year by Tim Atkin. Lukas grew up in Rawsonville in the Breederivier valley, and was always surrounded by vineyards and wine. His wines are produced in the Devon Valley and the grapes are sourced from Stellenbosch, Paarl and Swartland. Each wine and it’s name has a specific story behind it and his wines have become extremely sought-after.
When Lukas van Loggerenberg was a youngster growing up in Rawsonville he would hike up the mountain with a few friends to a swimming spot that they had discovered, to reach this pool they had to jump off a 5m cliff. When it was Lukas's turn to jump, hesitation would creep in and taking that leap seemed impossible. With his friends cheering him on and reminding him that he could do it he would take a deep breath and jump. Those few seconds in the air are indescribable! Shouting GERONIMO! at the top of your lungs. This wine reminds Lukas of that leap he took when starting this big wine venture, with friends cheering and helping to make us realise that it can be done. This is referenced by the leaping boy in the top left hand corner. The label also shows a piece of the South African heritage in the form of the postage stamp depicting the South African national fish, the Galjoen.

'Transparent cherry red with, as with all of Lukas van L's wines, however young, a colourless rim. Some evolved beetroot notes on the nose. Sweet palate entry – a real charmer, though I'm not sure there is much point in ageing this morello-cherry-flavoured, well-judged wine for that much longer. Great delicacy and integrity. Quite long with an appetisingly neat finish. And so precise. If it were a singer, it would have perfect pitch. This has come on in leaps and bounds since both Julia and I first tasted it in 2017. Still with a certain stoniness on the end. What's not to like? Nothing exaggerated.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (May 2020)
'“I didn’t want to do a tutti-fruity Cinsaut,” says Lukas van Loggerenberg, who sources these grapes from cooler climate Faure. It’s a fine, lightly wooded style, with lots of whole bunch spice, fine tannins and sappy red cherry and pomegranate flavours. 2018-23.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 93/100
