Young Guns | For the classicists and the geeks alike, an incredible collection
About the SessionWhat is a Young Gun?
A talented winemaker who pushes the boundaries, breaks the rules and creates cutting-edge wines with personality and energy. Young Guns either work, or have worked for notable estates, but also produce unique wines under their own labels. They are dynamic, working together in pushing the envelope and promoting brand SA. They are the winemakers who should be on your radar as they are making some of the most daring, innovative, and simply delicious wines in SA. They travel and taste extensively, drawing inspiration from the classics through to the more edgy, hip styles and techniques, from the profound and obscure wine regions of the world. And then they apply their own creative interpretations on home soil, often searching for unique vineyard sites, cultivars and old vines. The results are most often small in numbers and high in demand, selling out on release. They are the rising stars, the future icons and ultimately, tomorrow’s investment wines.

About this Item
A partnership between cousins Bruwer Raats (a Strauss auction favourite) and Gavin Bruwer Slabbert who are on a pursuit to discover unique parcels of vineyards that 'celebrate the rich heritage of the Cape' with heirloom varieties like Hanepoot (Muscat d'Alexandrie), Chenin Blanc and of course home-grown Pinotage. The philosophy behind the craft is a lightness of touch that expresses the unique identities of these special sites.
Haarlem To Hope is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Semillon; Muscat d’ Frontignan and Muscat d’ Alexandrie. The varieties were brought to the Cape, by the early Dutch settlers and were the first varieties to be planted. In the years that followed, these varieties formed the cornerstone of grape growing in the Cape of Good Hope. For more than three centuries, the colourful people of our vibrant land have cultivated them. The wine celebrates a story of African hope and prosperity, a story that will evolve for centuries to come.
Winemakers personal tasting note:
'A concentration of bright fruit on the nose that follows through onto the palate, that creates tension and excitement all at once. Nectarine, pear and melon are given depth by touches of spice, lemongrass and ginger, while hints of floral and scrub enhances a further dimension. Time in older oak, with close lees contact, has helped to give the wine breadth and depth on the palate and keeps the focus with a saline and savoury linger.' - Gavin Slabbert

Critics Ratings
‘Poised and charming blend celebrating heirloom varieties Chenin Blanc and Semillon (64/28), with Muscats de Frontignan and d’Alexandrie. 2017 expressive pear and ginger, ripe fruit giving the impression of sweetness though bone-dry, savouriness from older oak, as in equally stellar 2016.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2019, 5* (95 pts)
'Haarlem to Hope - a reference to the early Dutch settlers’ voyage to the Cape - is a Chenin based white blend with Semillon and the two Muscats, aged in old wood. Waxy, herbal and refreshing with some orange zest and lemongrass undertones.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 92/100
