A Chinese Canton painted and lacquered paper fan, Qing Dynasty, 19th century
the guards and sticks gilt-lacquer decorated against a black ground with figures in a walled garden before a pavilion enclosed by mythical beasts and Buddhist emblems, the fan leaf brightly painted with three medallions each enclosing figures at various pursuits within elaborate terraced pavilions, surrounded by flowerheads, bats, mythical beasts, toads with cash, double gourd, ruyi sceptre and Buddhist emblems, the reverse with a continuous scene of a contest with figures on horseback, damage to the folds and minor tears, one leaf torn, loss of paint, the guards 28,3cm long; another, damaged, 26,1cm long; and a Japanese black and gilt lacquer case, Meiji period, 1868-1912, the hinged cover decorated with prunus blossom branches and a small bird, the reverse decorated in silk and painted with a pheasant amongst blooms, some damage to the hinge, 6,2cm high, 33,8cm long, 5,9cm deep
