Critics Ratings
‘Current ‘91 has characteristic Kanonkop deep purple colours, equally characteristic Pinotage sweetness, considerable personality - also not inconsiderable 13.1% alc. Yet still supple, quite soft. 30-year-old plus bush vines and Kanonkop hill soils - “just like they were when Van Riebeeck arrived” says (Beyers) Truter - plus a regimen of French oak always considered too expensive for this grape, has turned a so-called peasant tipple into something rather classier. New style since ‘89, when given both more oak - and a year in barrel, 15% new - and less skin contact, after short burst of warm then cool fermentation.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 1994, 4*
