About this Item
The Iconic Helderberg property has title deeds back to 1693. Hennie and son Manie Malan recognized the property’s unique terroir for crafting full-bodied red wines early on, but it was Piet du Toit in 1959 that put Alto on top. Heritage and tradition married with evolution and innovation are the hallmarks of this estate situated in the golden triangle of Stellenbosch. Only five winemakers have crafted wines at Alto over eight decades.

Critics Ratings
1980 - ‘Well-made dry red blend with beautiful finish. Now blended from Cabernet, Shiraz, and a little early Tinta Barocca. Cabernet Franc and Merlot will be introduced in the future. The ‘79 and ‘80 developed well and both awarded superior. Ready to drink a few years sooner than the Cabernet’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 1984, 4*
1989 - ‘1989 brilliant garnet depth, substantial, complex-flavoured, weighty, delicious - almonds, kirsch, cassis mix; strong tannic structure in finish. Perhaps finest so far, though will need year or two to become approachable, is so powerful. Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon mainly, and Franc, with Merlot, some Shiraz. Oak matured, recently larger proportion of newer wood.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 1992, 4*
