The i-jusi Portfolio Number 2
The i-jusi experimental graphics magazine was created shortly after South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994, and posed the question "What makes me African - and what does that look like?"
Garth Walker published the first issue in early 1995 showcasing South African visual vernacular design; with subsequent themed issues covering graphic design, illustration, typography, writing and photography. The magazine developed a worldwide following - despite a print run in the low hundreds - and has never been for sale.
To ensure the financial survival of the magazine, i-jusi, in collaboration with the Rooke Gallery, launched the limited edition i-jusi Portfolio Number 1 in 2010. The Portfolio of ten lithographs showcased work by selected artists from the first 24 issues of the magazine covering a wide range of themes. This initial Portfolio has been acquired by a large number of leading art museums and private collectors world wide.
i-jusi Portfolio Number 2 follows on from this success by inviting a selection of South AFrica's leading artists and photographers, two world renowned graphic designers and two local unknown designers, selected from submissions for ijusi #26: Afrika Tyopografika III issue, to explore ideas where lettering and typography are integral to the image in the context of the 'African experience'.
