Critics Ratings
‘Knock-out blue-tinged purple colour in outstanding 98 (5*), ABSA Pinotage Top Ten; penetrating aromas of ripe plum, banana, gutsy mineral inter-weave; massive, complex palate layered with seriously delicious ripe choc-cherry, cinnamon and clove, opulent lanolin-like creaminess. Firm but fine tannin for good 10 yrs.’ Keeping.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2000, 5*
‘Full medium ruby. Musky, gamey aromas of dark raspberry, truffle, roasted meat and flowers. Wonderfully sweet and deep, with wild, somewhat rustic flavors that some tasters may find daunting: leather, game, cigar tobacco, fresh blood. But there's also superb thickness and depth of fruit. Very long, ripe back end reminded me of a topnotch Cornas. (Owner Johan Krige says the Kanonkop pinotage routinely goes through an earthy, barnyard stage on the way to becoming Burgundian.)’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com (March 2003), 92/100
