About this Item
Patatsfontein is a winemaking venture formed by Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, fund manager Henk Kotze and Fritz Schoon – ‘Master’ baker of Schoon De Companje in Stellenbosch. Reenen's accomplished hand and ever-increasing skills are especially impressive considering his young age. He's possibly our finest new-generation winemaker at present and his latest releases are just epic! Their 2014 Steen was Tim Atkin's White Wine Discovery of the Year and changed the status quo of what can be achieved in a region essentially known for sweet Muscadel.
This unique wine is made from an old single vineyard situated 600m above sea level in the Montagu mountains planted on Karoo slate and shale. Today it is one of South Africa’s greatest Chenin Blancs.

'A three way joint-venture which includes Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, this is my white wine discovery of 2015. Formerly sold off to the local co-op, this Montagu Chenin Blanc is a revelation. Saline, textured and oatmealy, with some skin tannins, wax and spice and perfectly judged oak. Drink: 2015-22' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 94/100
'2014 single-vineyard chenin from Montagu has Old World styling, faint stonefruit, lemongrass & green olive notes, & very dry; earthy & mineral, moderate alcohol, perfect balance. Nothing overt, has quiet assurance. More a ‘sense of being’ than a wine.'- Platter's SA Wine Guide 2016, 4.5*
