A Japanese Satsuma earthenware koro and cover, late Meiji Period (1868-1912)
compressed ovoid, raised on three mask-headed outset legs, the shoulders with pierced lug-shaped handles, the body painted with oval panels with figures at various pursuits, enclosed by a dark blue ground with gilt highlights, the pierced cover surmounted by a shi-shi, the cover with paper label, 16cm high
Purchased by William Henry Kelly, chief procurement officer of the Royal Navy for the Far East stationed in Hong Kong from 1895-1928, in Shanghai in 1898
