About this Item
Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).
The secret to Straw Wine is harvesting Chenin grapes at normal ripeness levels to capture a healthy acidity. The grapes are dried outside in the shade until they are half raisined, concentrating flavours, acidity and sugar into a super intense, but balanced treat. Fermentation is in old French barrels with indigenous yeasts and can last up to a year. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined.

Critics Ratings
'Impressive track record of 6 (out of 7 vintages) maximum 5 star ratings in the guide. And now the prestigious Dessert Wine of the Year accolade for 2015, a powerhouse of concentration & flavour, apricot & dried peach, barley sugar. From chenin, at 294 g/l sugar almost syrupy in texture, but tangy acidity keeps it fresh. Gorgeous. Natural ferment/aged older-barrels, unfiltered, No 2014. 375 ml.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2017, 5*
'A blend of Chenin Blanc grapes from schist and granite soils, this doesn’t seem cloying in the slightest, despite its 294 grams of sugar. Subtle oak, notes of tarte tatin and orange peel, a slight volatile lift and remarkable concentration: this is one of the Cape’s very best stickies. Drink: 2016-22' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2016, 95/100
'The 2015 Straw Wine (if you are looking for the 2014, it was not produced) is 100% Chenin Blanc as usual from schist and granite soils, although Andrea Mullineux pointed out that they look at the bunches as they need to avoid rot, whilst the bunches cannot be too small as they shrivel into not much. Delivering around 290 grams per liter of residual sugar, it has a generous clear honey, marzipan, almond and quince scented bouquet that is well defined. The palate is beautifully balanced, the acidity slicing through the viscous honeyed fruit, leaving a sense of freshness in the mouth that leaves you desiring more. One of the most elegant straw wines produced so far by Chris and Andrea.' - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Apr 2017)
'Deep coppery gold. Intense and extremely sweet with a hint of VA but nothing to worry about. Just brilliantly sweet and concentrated with lots of tarte-Tatin juice. Great vibrancy.' - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Oct 2016)
