About this Item

South Africa
A Zulu black and white telephone wire Ukhamba and cover
the rotund basket woven with an interlacing zig-zag pattern
36cm high by 29cm diameter

Notes

The term "Ukhamba" encompasses both an earthenware pot and a distinctive type of basket with a dual purpose – either for fetching and storing water or for the intricate processes of brewing and serving beer. This versatile term beautifully captures the essence of vessels that seamlessly blend functionality and cultural significance in their design. 1 Traditionally an Ukhamba was made from tightly bound Ilala Palm fibre, however in the early 20th century, telephone wire was introduced as a new medium as night watchmen would use the material at their disposable to "spill-destroy lonely-boredom." 2
