Notes

Angeline Masuku was born in 1967 and lives in the village of Hlabisa in rural Kwazulu-Natal. She has been weaving baskets since she was eight years old and is now a Master Weaver and pioneer in the field of basketry in South Africa. Her weaving techniques and the materials she uses are strongly rooted in the ancient Zulu art of basket weaving. Her baskets are collected locally and internationally, in 2007, she won the FNB Vita Award.

Masuku's artistic creations are marked by the incorporation of animal, house, and figural motifs. She is driven by the belief that her innovative weaving serves as a means of transmitting traditional Zulu lifestyles to younger generations. For instance, as seen in this Ukhamba, the depiction of a traditional Zulu home is evident, complete with wall openings serving as windows. Masuku deliberately maintains this element in her work, emphasizing its role in communicating older traditions through the contemporary practice of woven art forms.
