Critics Ratings
‘Regarded as a SA ‘first growth’ Bordeaux blend, traditionally cab-based with merlot, cab franc, as in 2014 with 74/17/9 composition. Plush fruit soaks up 100% new French oak, is reined in by long, structuring tannins. Trademark ageability, as for bright-fruited 2013 (4.5 stars, 92 pts).’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2018, 5* (95/100)
'The 2014 Paul Sauer is Kanonkop’s top cuvée and was matured for 24 months in new French barriques. It has an intense bouquet of blackberry, raspberry and mint mixed with sage and oregano. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin; the oak is well integrated, and there is a satisfying rondeur and harmony toward the elegant, lightly spiced, quite persistent finish. Always one of the Cape’s most impressive reds, the 2014 shows its class.' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Aug 2018)
'A solid, dark, grippy style, with roasted alder and juniper notes framing a core of steeped red and black currant fruit. Offers a sanguine tang on the finish, along with tobacco and bay leaf accents. Shows lots of range and character. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2019 through 2023.' - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Feb 2018)
'The current release that fans of Stellenbosch property Kanonkop should not miss out on is the Paul Sauer 2014. A blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, it was matured for 24 months in French oak, 100% new. The nose is beguiling with notes of red and black fruit, flowers and fresh herbs, a little oyster shell and attractive oak. The palate is medium bodied (alcohol: 14.27%) with pure fruit, fresh acidity and firm but not astringent tannins, the finish long and savoury. It’s supremely elegant and with all great wine, it drinks exceptionally well now but should give great enjoyment for many years to come.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100 (Nov 2017)
‘Paul Sauer is one of the few genuine Cape icons. Blending mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it always seems to absorb its 24 months in new oak with ease. More forward than the straight Kanonkop Cabernet but just as age worthy, this is savoury and focused with leafy freshness. Drink 2019-30.’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 96/100
