Critics Ratings

‘Bright medium ruby. Expressive aromas of blackberry, woodsmoke and chocolate. Very sweet, plush and deep but not overly fruity, with plum, blackberry and licorice flavors complicated by a hint of banana chips and smoky minerality. Finishes with a firm spine of well-integrated tannins, a dusty mocha note and excellent length and grip.’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 91/100 (Feb 2017)

‘2014 previewed last edition, now bottled & living up to promise. Invitingly rich, dark berry, fresh earth features; smooth yet firm, glides to savoury conclusion. Impressive quality for volume produced.’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2017, 4*

‘A juicy, racy style, with deliciously pure plum and blackberry compote flavors enlivened by an anise note that lingers through the finish. Features dark fruit but remains bright and fresh in feel. Well done. Drink now through 2020.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Sep 2016)

‘In my book, Kanonkop is the king of Pinotage - a grape which I confess to having a love hate relationship with. However, this is unquestionably one of the ones I adore, not least because it is their flagship take on the variety. The 2014 has just been released in South Africa and should hit the independent merchants' shelves in the next few weeks. Cropped at very low levels from bush vines which are over 60 years old this is richly complex and with dramatic black fruit, port like richness, spice, chocolate, bitumen, liquorice, toffee and floral juniper notes. The tannins are as ripe and rumbustious as is its foursquare flamboyant structure. Needs time, but will be well worth the wait. Just under 4,900 bottles made, so don’t delay.’ – John Stumpfig, Decanter.com, 94/100 (2015)
