About this Item
In 1992, the late Giulio Bertrand retired to South Africa from Italy and bought the historic Morgenster farm on the slopes of the Schaapenberg, which dates back to 1711. Specialising in long-ageing Bordeaux-style reds, the director of Cheval Blanc, Pierre Luton, was hired as the consultant.

‘The 2014 Estate Reserve is a blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 14% Petit Verdot. This was tasted from two bottles as the first was slightly oxidized. The nose is nicely focused on the second, featuring detailed blackberry, briar and tobacco scents, plus notes of cedar coming through with time. The fleshy palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and gentle grip, that balsamic leitmotif continuing and demonstrating fine precision on the finish. Excellent.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Jul 2021)
‘Made from a blend of 36% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with 14% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2014 Estate Reserve offers up a nose of juicy, dusty and round red and black fruit flavors, with elements of turned earth, gravel and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate displays flavors of blackberry reduction, dusty plum and crème de cassis before showing lifting tannins with rounded acidity. The 18,000-bottle production should continue to bring pleasure for the next 5 to 7 years.’ – Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 91/100 (May 2021)
‘It's easy to forget how well Morgenster's reds age, such is the rush to drink red wines in their youth these days. This cuvée of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with 14% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is polished and refined, easily handling its 14.8% alcohol and showing graphite and tobacco notes. 2019-24’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 94/100
‘Another tweak sees cab & merlot with 36% each, & 14% for cab franc & petit verdot in 2014. Big & bold, but classic flavour profile, with more depth & balance than partner blend, though rather drying tannins also challenge the undoubted fruit concentration. In larger formats too.’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2018, 4.5* (94/100)
