About this Item
With a history dating back over 300 years, Vergelegen has kept a simple winemaking philosophy this entire time, ‘there must be harmony between the old and the new’. Having produced fine, modern wines for two decades, Vergelegen is one of South Africa’s highest regarded, established producers. Situated on the Schaapenberg in Somerset West, overlooking False Bay. The 3,000 hectare estate is situated in one of the richest floral regions of the world and they practice sustainable farming and have various environmental projects.
The First Thought site is established on a north westerly slope with uniformly deep and rich Hutton soils.
The Last Word is one of the oldest vineyards, planted in 1999 and has beautiful deep red soil with its very high clay content.

Critics Ratings
‘First Thought comes from a single, sheltered site on decomposed granite soils and is one of the earliest picked wines at Vergelegen. Ripe, textured and plush with smooth red and dark berry flavours and sweet vanilla spice supported by tannic grip. 2020-26’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 92/100
‘First Thought Cabernet Sauvignon is from a modern, early ripening clone on north-westerly facing slopes. Matured for 18 months in French oak, 100% new, the nose shows red currant and plums, rose petal and the merest hint of fynbos. The palate is medium bodied with pure fruit, fresh acidity and a classically dry finish.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100 (Apr 2019)
'The Last Word is picked three weeks later than First Thought and hails from a virus-free block in the lower part of the farm. It's a classic style, with supple, granular tannins, plenty of grassy perfume and stylishly handled new oak. Has the finesse to age further in bottle. 2020-29' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 93/100
