About this Item

2014 Charmes-Chambertin
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

The family-run Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy's oldest and most revered domaines. They own many Grand Cru plots in Gevrey-Chambertin as well as part of the highly sought-after Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques vineyard. Established in the early 20th Century by Armand Rousseau, the domaine initially owned small parcels throughout Gevrey-Chambertin. Over the next century, under both Armand Rousseau and his son Charles, who took over the reins in 1959, the domaine acquired various Grand Cru vineyards in Charmes, Mazis and Mazoyères-Chambertin, culminating in a plot in Le Chambertin itself in 1994. Careful winemaking, which allows for terroir-expression, the sparing use of oak and old vines, all make for elegant and pure wines that are built for long ageing.

The Charmes-Chambertin comprises grapes from two parcels of Charmes-Chambertin appellation and a parcel of Mazoyères-Chambertin. In Burgundy, the word 'Charmes' refers to the ancient communal fields which became abandoned and overgrown. Here, 'Charmes' means 'Straw' or 'Stubble-field'. The soil of the Charmes Chambertin vineyard is composed of crinoid limestone on the upper slopes and Comblanchien limestone further down."

Critics Ratings

‘Dusty cherry, currant and leafy underbrush notes are the highlights of this tightly wound red, which is not giving much today, yet there is a center of sweet berry fruit. Fine, resonant and fresh aftertaste, with refined tannins. Best from 2022 through 2040.’ – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 96/100 (Sep 2017)

‘Elegant and attractively perfumed aromas speak of red cherry, rose petal, spice and sandalwood nuances. The detailed and highly energetic medium-bodied flavors possess a sleek, even silky mouth feel before culminating in a lingering and ever-so-mildly austere finale. This well-balanced and understated effort is really quite lovely and should drink reasonably well after only 7 to 8 years of bottle age yet repay a dozen plus.’ – Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 93/100 (Jan 2017)

‘Bright medium red. Brambly aromas of redcurrant, minerals and dried flowers. Tighter in the mouth than the premier crus here, showing less charm and early sweetness but noteworthy intensity and a firm shape. More minerals, dried flowers and earth than primary fruit. Charmes is never an opulent wine here, noted Rousseau, who pulled up some of his "tired old vines" after the 2011 harvest for replanting. Finishes firmly tannic but not dry. Not at all a feminine style of Charmes, no doubt owing to the high percentage of Mazoyères fruit.’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 90-92/100 (Dec 2015)

‘Unusually intense with strong cherry fruit and a great line of pure very ripe fruit. Very gourmand! Long.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5+/20 (Nov 2015)
