About this Item
Château Capbern is a Cru Bourgeois wine estate in the Saint-Estèphe region of Bordeaux. It produces a red wine of good structure, easily capable of aging 10 to 20 years in good vintages. The estate had been in the ownership of the Gasqueton family for ten generations and was previously called Capbern Gasqueton. In 2012 it was sold alongside Calon-Ségur to the French insurance company Suravenir, who dropped the second part of the name from the 2013 vintage. It has increased in quality since and offers tremendous value.

Critics Ratings
‘Very dark crimson. Very suave and sophisticated nose. Very juicy fruit and vibrant. Great attack and even a little hint of hot mustard on the palate! Not heavy. Great vitality.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Feb 2018)
‘Packed with the dark tannins and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine, produced by the team of Calon Ségur is intense, concentrated and dark. It has a firm structure, solid and with a luscious aftertaste. The acidity of the year just shows at the end. Drink from 2026.’ – Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 93/100 (Apr 2017)
‘The 2014 Capbern is bold, ripe and quite juicy. Although not especially subtle, the 2014 possesses striking aromatic nuance, power and intensity. Dried cherry, licorice, herbs, tobacco and mint add attractive aromatic topnotes, but it is the wine’s juiciness that stands out most. This is a strong showing. The 2014 offers plenty of near- and medium-term appeal, but also has enough structure to drink well for at least a number of years.’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 92/100 (Feb 2017)
‘Powerful, ripe stuff here with hefty tannic structure and affluent black fruit. The toasty oak is evident and will integrate and merge into the complex flavours already starting to show.’ – Decanter.com, 91/100 (Oct 2017)
‘The 2014 Capbern (the now non-appended name for what was formerly Capbern-Gasqueton) has a clean and pure bouquet, very Pauillac in style with graphite-tinged black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite minerally in the mouth, great tension with a touch of piquancy on the finish. There is plenty of energy here and a very long aftertaste. Tasted twice with consistent notes, this comes highly recommended notwithstanding its value-for-money.’ - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Mar 2017)
