Notes
The term 'neves' has been part of the prison lexicon for over a century, denoting an extended period of incarceration, typically at least seven years. Pronounced to rhyme with 'nevers,' it signifies a duration bordering on the limits of 'never-ever.' According to the Oxford English Dictionary, 'neves' equates to seven years of hard labour and originates from the reversal of the word 'seven,' known as an ananym, derived from the Greek words for 'back' and 'name.'
Crafted to honor Nelson Mandela's 85th birthday, the artist's pair of etchings, NEVES I and II, feature the ananym 'neves' printed in reverse through a back-to-front etching process. The artwork resembles the original word 'seven,' with some letters inverted, creating a mirrored effect that requires a mirror for full legibility. Within the intricate lines of the word 'neves,' tiny sentences are formed, reflecting on excerpts from Mandela's renowned I am Prepared to Die speech delivered during his sentencing at the Rivonia trial. Mandela's enduring legacy, marked by his lack of bitterness despite enduring nearly four 'neves' sentences, is underscored by his unwavering commitment to his grandchildren, demonstrating a level of time and respect akin to that reserved for royalty or presidents.
