About this Item

1990 Sauternes
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (of Lafite), Rieussec is a Premier Cru Classé Sauternes property located in the commune of Fargues. Rieussec was first established as a wine estate by a chapter of Carmelite monks, who remained owners until the French Revolution when the property was siezed and auctioned off to a Bordeaux wine merchant, Jean-Baptiste Mareilhac. In 1984, Rieussec was purchased by Domaines Barons de Rothschild. The estate's 75 hectares of vines are planted with 89% Sémillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle. Despite its pedigree and exceptional quality, Rieussec offers relative value and ageability.

Critics Ratings

‘Blockbuster. Wow. Wonderful. Dark yellow with a gold hue. Full-bodied and very sweet, with thick and powerful fruit. The spice, orange peel, honey and dried apricot character goes on and on. Long, long finish. Best after 2005.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 97/100 (Aug 200)

‘Exotic aromas of truffle, game, dried fruits and tobacco; strong impression of botrytis. Powerful on entry, then very sweet (74 grams/liter r.s.) and very concentrated, with an amazingly glyceral texture. Powerful and very deep. Still some sulfur to be absorbed. One of the richest wines of this group, really thick with extract. Finishes firm, youthful and very, very long. This vintage was picked in a single trie extending from late October into November.’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 94/100 (Jul 1998)
