About this Item
Pewsey Vale is a winery located in the Eden Valley in South Australia and focuses on Riesling from one enclosed single vineyard. It was the first, and remains one of the only wineries in Australia to work by this one-grape, one-vineyard philosophy for its production of wines.
In 1847, Joseph Gilbert, an Englishman, first planted the vineyards at Pewsey Vale. Some vines from the original 19th-century plantings still thrive today. In 1961, Geoffrey Parson bought the estate and discovered its historic vines. He enlisted Wyndham Hill Smith to help rejuvenate the vineyards. Initially, they planted 56 hectares (138 acres) in contoured rows in the Eden Valley. Today, part of these vines remains as Pewsey Vale vineyards. The site's soil, formed millions of years ago when a river flowed through, exposes minerals and sand. This has left soils in which Riesling flourishes.
The Eden Valley region, situated within the Barossa zone, is known for its high-altitude vineyards and cool climate, which are particularly well-suited for growing Riesling grapes. This combination of factors allows for the production of vibrant, aromatic, and age-worthy Riesling wines.

Critics Ratings
2011 - ‘Vibrant, bracing and compelling, this white aims pear, pineapple and lime flavors straight to the palate. Persists impressively on the finish.’ - Wine Spectator, 91/100
‘Punched up aromas of lime sherbet, talcum powder and apple blossom only tell part of the story. This is a concentrated wine with a firm backbone of acid that shows off the intense citrus character, plus hints of crushed stone and underripe peaches.’ - Wine Enthusiast, 90/100
‘Yalumba's bone dry single vineyard Riesling. There is certainly fruit but not the finest nose at the moment. I found some suggestion of polish. Rather heavier than usual. This wine is usually leaner and fresher. But at least it's not painfully skinny.’ - Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com, 16/20 (Nov 2012)
2014 - ‘Taut, sleek, polished and distinctively spicy, with black pepper, white pepper, floral and citrus flavors on a lively frame. Best from 2019 through 2030.’ - Wine Spectator, 91/100
‘Taut, introvert nose; perhaps the wine is starting to retreat into its shell? Very juicy on the palate with lots of substance. Bone dry with a green fruit character. Again that slightly powdery character on the finish (like the 2015). Very proud and substantial. You feel as though there would be a lot left in the Petri dish ... Smouldering finish, though less ethereal than the 2015.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Sep 2015)
‘For such a young wine, this seems surprisingly developed—or maybe it's just riper than usual. It may lack in bracing lemon-lime department, but hints of apple blossoms and tropical fruit turn spicy and a bit apricot-like on the long finish.’ - Wine Enthusiast
