About this Item

2003 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

Joh. Jos. Prüm is easily one of Germany's most famous wine producers. The estate is based in the village of Wehlen on the banks of the Mosel, and produces top-quality Rieslings that are noted for their balance and longevity. J.J. Prüm's wines are highly collectable. The Prüm family has been making wine in the Mosel for several hundred years, but Joh. Jos. Prüm was founded properly in 1911, by Johann Josef Prüm. The estate was taken over by his brother Sebastian in 1920, the year that Joh. Jos. Prüm created its first sweet Auslese wine, and from there went on to become one of Germany's most well-known and highly respected wines. It has remained in the family since.

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard is one of the most esteemed sites in the Mosel region, renowned for its steep, south-facing slopes and blue slate soils, which contribute to the unique character of the Riesling grapes grown there. Auslese is a classification in German winemaking that indicates a late-harvested wine made from grapes with high levels of ripeness and sweetness.

Critics Ratings

‘Stunning. Very aromatic and expressive, offering rose, apricot, lime and mineral notes allied to a clear, gossamer frame. Well-balanced, though somewhat soft in structure. Forward today, the finish should pick up more intensity with age. Best from 2008 through 2028.’ - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 94/100 (June 2017)
