About this Item

2012 - 2015, 2017 - 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Combes Dessus
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Complex, elegant and long-ageing, the wines of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville in Volnay are testament to one of the great domaines in Burgundy. From 1952 until his death in 2003, Jacques d’Angerville made his family domaine the flag bearer of Volnay. As Allen Meadows writes, his winemaking methods were ‘minimalist in the extreme’. A non-interventionist winemaker, as his father before him, Jacques allowed the domaine’s fine terroirs to be fully expressed in his wines. Rather putting his efforts into the vines, he trusted in great parcels and old vines of a unique clone, ‘Pinot d’Angerville’. The domaine holds four Crus: Fremiets, on the border or Pommard, Champans, Taillepieds, and the great d’Angerville monopole Clos des Ducs. Very littles has changed since Guillaume d’Angerville took over from his father in 2003. His wines possess the magic from his father’s legacy and, today, the demand for d’Angerville cuvées might even be greater than in Jacques’ day.

Pommard is a renowned appellation within the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy, known for its robust and structured red wines made from Pinot Noir. Premier Cru vineyards in Pommard, such as Combes Dessus, are highly regarded for producing wines of exceptional quality, depth, and complexity.

Critics Ratings

2013 - 'Light crimson. Broad and mulchy on the nose. Very fresh and lively. Racy and with really grainy texture. Leave for a long time in your cellar... Lots of acidity on the finish still.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (March 2015)

‘A deft touch of wood frames a densely fruited and equally fresh array of ripe black cherry aromas that possess subtle notes of earth and exotic tea. There is fine density and punch to the mouth coating middle weight flavors that display a dusty, balanced and mildly austere finale.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound (April 2015)

‘The 2013 Pommard Combes-Dessus comes across as a touch angular and compact in this vintage, a year in which the challenging conditions are impossible to escape. Hints of dark red cherry, plum and spice struggle to emerge, but the 2013 remains on the austere side relative to prior editions.’ - Antonio Galloni, Vinous (April 2015)

2014 - ‘An emphatically earthy, fresh and ripe nose speaks of cassis and subtle floral nuances. There is both good volume and punch to the delicious and solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the complex, dusty and persistent finale. This is not a wine of finesse but I like the overall sense of balance and harmony.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound, 91/100 (April 2016)

‘Light bright cherry red. More spice than the Volnay village wine. A little peppery and herbal but not stemmy (they don’t include them). Lovely balance here and very smooth and rounded already even if the tannins are present. Fine, firm, dry texture lifted by the pretty red fruit. Again, not very long but lovely harmony. Sophisticated Pommard.’ - Julia Harding MW, Jancisrobinson.com, 16+/20 (March 2016)

2015 - ‘Dark ruby-red. Complex nose melds black cherry, licorice, violet, cocoa powder and spices, along with a faint leathery nuance. Very ripe but not at all roasted, conveying an impression of purity to its fruit-driven flavors of black cherry and blackberry. Lovely acidity draws out the long, positively tart finish. This wine smells like a Volnay, but that's hardly surprising as it's made by a producer in Volnay from vines in Les Combes Dessus, on Pommard's border with Volnay.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 90-92/100 (Jan 2017)

'A ripe and dense nose is composed primarily by notes of plum, violet and warm earth nuances. As is typically the case there is more size, weight and power to the equally dense medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, all wrapped in a firmly structured but well-balanced finish. Patience required.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound, 89-91/100 (April 2017)

‘Tasted not long before bottling. Dark crimson. A bit more reserved on the nose than the Volnay Premier Cru. Racy with energy and crunchy fruit but very youthful and reserved. And a little more occluded than the Volnay Premier Cru.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (April 2017)

2017 - ‘A more deeply pitched nose combines notes of plum, dark currant, earth and a whiff of the sauvage. Once again there is excellent intensity to the racy but muscular and robust flavors that deliver fine length on the more firmly structured and mildly rustic finish. This too is going to need at least a few years of cellaring to become more civilized as it's tightly wound today.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound, 89-92/100 (April 2020)

‘Bright garnet. Meat-and-two-veg on the nose. Very firm and demanding. Masses of tannin and positively surly fruit. Leave this for an age! d’Angerville structure without Volnay charm. Pretty drying on the end.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (March 2019)

2018 - ‘A slightly riper nose offers up notes of poached plum, dark raspberry liqueur and whiffs of earth and underbrush. The supple, round and appealingly textured flavors possess first-rate delineation and a subtle salinity that adds a touch of lift to the sappy if ever-so-slightly rustic finale.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound, 91/100 (April 2020)
