Notes
In landscape I’ve long since abandoned working in the field and this has freed me from the tyranny of the literal scene. I now often break a creative block by painting a sky because it pleases me and that starts a sense of atmosphere that leads me on. At times like this I have no idea what is going to emerge, and that’s the thrill of it. Some of the best work I’ve done in landscape has been made in this way, and one can see the recurring passages of work that appear in thematic series of paintings.
