About this Item
The Clos du Caillou was founded in 1895 as a hunting reserve. In 1955, Paul Pouizin realised the amazing terroir that lay in this forested reserve and cleared portions of the land to plant vines. In 1996, Claude Pouizin’s youngest daughter Sylvie and her husband, Jean-Denis Vacheron, took over at Le Clos du Caillou. Jean-Denis proved an impressive winemaker – led by passion without limit and visionary ideas. Le Clos du Caillou jumped ahead under his management and became one of the best producers in the appellation. After his tragic passing in 2002, Sylvie picked up the reins with help from the talented winemaker Bruno Gaspard. From the 2010 vintage, the domain is certified organic.

Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz 2015
‘This is tightly coiled, with intense raspberry and cherry reduction notes waiting to unwind, but held in check for now by myriad licorice, iron, rooibos tea and singed alder details. Shows terrific cut and tension through the finish, revealing a blaze of minerality. Just needs some time to harmonize fully. Best from 2020 through 2040.’ - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 96/100 (Nov 2017)
‘A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz is plump and juicy—highly appealing for its bright berries and crisp acids. Yet it's also rich and concentrated, with velvety tannins that linger on the finish.’ – Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Oct 2017)
‘Sample a little tired on the nose but it's extremely luscious on the palate. Sweet, salty and strawberry. May be a bit much for some palates but there is no shortage of personality.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17-/20 (Nov 2016)
‘Deep ruby. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of raspberry, boysenberry and cherry pit, backed by a suave floral nuance. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering sharply focused, densely packed red and blue fruit and cola flavors and a hint of succulent herbs. A minerally nuance adds lift and focus to the youthfully tannic, focused finish, which clings with superb intensity.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 92-94/100 (Dec 2016)
Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres 2015
‘Ripe and racy, with a delicious beam of raspberry, red currant and boysenberry coulis flavors stretching from start to finish, while mouthwatering acidity and racy graphite notes lend supportive energy along the way. Lovely black tea and wood spice aromas fuel the finish, with the fruit smoldering along. Best from 2019 through 2040.’ - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 95/100 (Nov 2017)
‘The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres is deeper and richer than the base cuvée and possesses terrific notes of black raspberries, blackberry jam, exotic flower, and orange blossom. Full-bodied, polished, elegant and gorgeously pure on the palate, with fine tannin, it's a killer wine. Made from 95% Grenache (the balance is Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Vaccarèse), it too has a decade and more of prime drinking.’ – Jeb Dunnuck, 94/100 (Oct 2017)
‘Sourced from the lieu-dit of Les Bédines, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres is almost 100% Grenache. It has the variety's silky tannins but plenty of them, so hold onto your bottles for a few years until the wine comes into balance. Right now, it's clearly got plenty of concentrated red fruit and peppery spice but comes across tight and crisp.’ - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Oct 2017)
