About this Item

2009 Saint-Estèphe
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Château Capbern is a Cru Bourgeois wine estate in the Saint-Estèphe region of Bordeaux. It produces a red wine of good structure, easily capable of aging 10 to 20 years in good vintages. The estate had been in the ownership of the Gasqueton family for ten generations and was previously called Capbern Gasqueton. In 2012 it was sold alongside Calon-Ségur to the French insurance company Suravenir, who dropped the second part of the name from the 2013 vintage. It has increased in quality since and offers tremendous value.

Capbern had been in the Gasqueton family for ten generations, and until 2013, was known as Capbern Gasqueton. Sitting on the eastern edge of the village of Saint-Estèphe, under the same ownership as Calon-Segur, with the same top winemaking team, and well-placed vineyards which take advantage of the gravel and clay-rich soils of the northern Médoc, Capbern is one of the last few hidden stars of Bordeaux.

Critics Ratings

‘Crimson is beginning to lighten a little at the edges. Terroir fresh and very Cabernet on the nose with tannins in retreat. Clearly good classy stuff that's drinking well now. I tasted it cellar-cool and the tannins were not obtrusive at all. Nice fruity length. This really reverberates on the finish and was a great buy en primeur!’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Dec 2016)

‘A blend 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot raised in 50% new oak and 50% one-year old barrels. The Capbern-Gasqueton 2009 has a very precise bouquet with ample red fruits: wild strawberry and raspberry with subtle earth and liquorice notes underneath and beginning to rise to the surface with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with good fruit concentration, slightly chalky tannins at this stage, good tension and mineralite coming through towards the finish with blacker fruits, one again with a hint of liquorice. Nice length and persistency. Great value + great wine equals happy customer.’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 91/100 (Jan 2012)
