About this Item

2009, 2010 Saint-Émilion
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Château Laforge is located in Saint-Emilion and belongs to Jonathan Maltus, an English winemaker who came to Bordeaux in the 1990s. Maltus is considered a "rebel" among the vintners of the area, as he entered the "garage era" of Bordeaux wine, when it was about breaking all the rules that could be broken, and made a name for himself with very independent wines, which, however, are in no way inferior to the classics in terms of quality. As there is no Château Laforge in the sense of a building, the grapes are further processed in the cellar of Château Teyssier, which is also owned by Maltus.

Laforge is a blend of three separate St.-Emilion terroirs assembled by proprietor Jonathan Malthus that is usually a blend of approximately 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc.

This lot consists of the following wines:
Laforge Saint-Émilion 2009 (5 x 750ml)
Laforge Saint-Émilion 2010 (1 x 750ml)

Critics Ratings

2009:
'Bright, deep ruby-red. Blackcurrant, blackberry, licorice, mocha and dark chocolate. Densely packed, sweet and deep, with noteworthy energy to the black fruit, mineral and bitter chocolate flavors. Still tightly coiled for a Right Bank 2009 for all its plushness of texture. The slowly building finish is concentrated and long.’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 92/100 (Jul 2012)

‘From proprietor Jonathan Maltus, this blend of three terroirs, two on sand and one on gravel, is a blend of 92% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. The prodigious 2009 is the finest vintage to date. Inky blue/purple, with notes of licorice, camphor, black truffle, blackberry and blueberry, this full-bodied wine has massive concentration yet at the same time displays elegance and harmony. The equilibrium and 60+-second length make for a huge, massive, but incredibly well-balanced wine, like a shadow of the proprietor himself. Drink it over the next 15 or more years.’ – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 96/100 (Dec 2011)

2010:
'Dark crimson but not as dark as some of it peers. Fragrant and gentle even if a little bit simple but not as disastrously over extracted as some.' - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2014)

'Good bright red-ruby. Pure aromas of red and blue fruits, minerals and chalk dust. Juicy and imploded, with the wine's underlying minerality leavening its 'weetness today. Finishes savory and long but youthfully tight for merlot.' - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 91/100 (Jul 2013)

'Dominated by juicy Merlot, the wine has weight, density and a full, fruity blackberry character. This generosity is balanced by a restraining dry, tannic core.' - Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 90/100 (May 2013)
