About this Item
Château Ormes de Pez is an estate in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux's northwestern Haut-Médoc region. The estate was formerly classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel and, when the classification was formally dropped in 2011, became a part of the marketing group Les Exceptionnels with five other former Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel properties. Château Ormes de Pez lies within the small hamlet area of Pez. Prior to the French Revolution, the property was part of the Domaine de Pez estate in Saint-Estèphe, it's situation being later defined by the elm trees ("ormes" in French) once growing on the property.
The Château Ormes des Pez 2014 is a blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

‘The 2014 Ormes de Pez showed less well than expected in the previous Southwold tasting six years earlier. This is a completely different kettle of fish. It has a well-defined nose with fresh, marine-tinged black fruit, hints of tobacco and pressed flowers emerging with time. This is delineation and full of energy. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit, impressive depth and structure, yet it maintains freshness with a black olive and saline finish that gets the saliva flowing. Superb.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 92/100 (Feb 2024)
‘Deep youthful garnet. Still with masses of leafy black fruit freshness. Dry, taut, sober. Not as rich as some but harmonious and refined and long. Concentration gives a slight bitterness at the end.’ – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Feb 2024)
‘In my opinion, the Cazes family have been delivering one of the best value wines in Bordeaux over the past few years here. The 2014 was delicious en primeur and continues to be so. There's some serious tannic structure here, needing more time to open up and so will age well, but it's full of bounce already, and the fruit is vibrant. It's fairly rich in texture and concentration - touches of clay within the Garonne gravel soils give power to the fruit - with a juicy salinity on the finish. 2% Petit Verdot rounds out the blend.’ – Jane Anson, Decanter.com, 92/100 (May 2018)
‘The wine has the firm tannins of the appellation, moderated by the black-currant fruitiness of the vintage. Spice and the dry structure will allow it to age well. With the same winemaking team as Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac, it will age well. Drink from 2022’ – Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 91/100 (Feb 2017)
‘Lively, with a mix of pomegranate, blood orange and bitter cherry notes, flecked with savory and backed by a pebbly finish. Features latent depth and should unwind with moderate cellaring. Best from 2019 through 2025.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (Mar 2017)
‘The Château Ormes des Pez 2014 is a blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot picked from 24 September with the young merlot and finishing around 12 October. It was cropped at 32 hectoliter per hectare. Small red cherries and kirsch form the bouquet, quite forward and perfumed with touches of lavender emerging with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, the tannins succulent for Les Ormes de Pez and imparting a fleshier and more approachable texture. This is nicely balanced with a touch of graphite on the finish lending it an almost Pauillac-like personality. Don't under-estimate this Saint Estèphe.’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90-92/100 (Apr 2015)
