Critics Ratings

2004:
‘I was really surprised by the slow development of this vintage in bottle, which is still young and with an incredible aging potential. The aromas are only starting to develop some tertiary characteristics while still showing a fruit side, and the spices are slowly increasing but the pace is really slow. The palate has concentration and depth, clean and focused flavors and great length, with outstanding overall balance and harmony. I think this is a more classical vintage than the 2005 I ended up tasting next to it, which can be a little more modern.’ – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 96/100 (Feb 2018)

‘Intense and complex with only the merest hint of hamster cages letting it down. Maybe a tad too concentrated and extreme for me. Now anyway.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Oct 2012)

‘Dark ruby. An intensely perfumed nose displays cherry-cola, cassis, licorice and woodsmoke, with a sexy floral quality and very good focus. Juicy, penetrating dark fruit flavors are given spine by tangy acidity and pick up bitter chocolate and spicecake nuances with air. Supple tannins add shape to the very long, sappy, smoke-accented finish. This is still a baby.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 94/100 (Nov 2011)

‘Exemplary Gran Reserva Rioja blending modernity with the best traditions of this famed region. Perfumed, lush and complex to start, then vibrant in the mouth, with excellent integration of flavors, acidity and tannins. Tastes of fine tobacco, mulled blackberry, chocolate and dry spices. Proper as the textbook calls for but individual as well. Best from 2014–2018.’ – Michael Schachner, Wine Enthusiast, 94/100 (Dec 2011)

‘Prado Enea is Muga’s top wine, a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 7% Garnacha, 7% Mazuelo and 6% Graciano, with three years in barrel and three years in bottle – this is the way Rioja used to be made. Truffley, with a citrus lift, underlying red fruit and leather.’ – Sarah Jane Evans MW, Decanter.com, 93/100

2005:
‘The nose is almost as young and undeveloped as the 2004, but it's on the palate where I see that the 2005 shows a little more polish and is perhaps a little less complete than the 2004. In any case, it might be a matter of personal taste, because both years are exceptional.’ - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Feb 2018)

‘Chocolate, black fruit, poised and broad; has the physique of a boxer but the balance of an acrobat. Traditional Rioja flavours with serious structure.’ – Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Nov 2015)

‘Deep ruby. Heady, mineral-tinged red fruit and rose scents are complemented by star anise, vanilla and woodsmoke. Supple, seamless and concentrated, offering intense raspberry, cherry and rose pastille flavors underscored by zesty minerality. Shows uncommon finesse for its power and finishes sweet, focused and extremely long. For the money, this is a crazy value.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 94/100 (Sep 2013)
