About this Item
Patatsfontein is a winemaking venture formed by Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, fund manager Henk Kotze and Fritz Schoon – ‘Master’ baker of Schoon De Companje in Stellenbosch. Reenen's accomplished hand and ever-increasing skills are especially impressive considering his young age. He's possibly our finest new-generation winemaker at present and his latest releases are just epic! Their 2014 Steen was Tim Atkin's White Wine Discovery of the Year and changed the status quo of what can be achieved in a region essentially known for sweet Muscadel.
This unique wine is made from an old single vineyard situated 600m above sea level in the Montagu mountains planted on Karoo slate and shale. Today it is one of South Africa’s greatest Chenin Blancs.

Critics Ratings
‘From a chenin single-vineyard in Montagu, the grapes wholebunch & naturally fermented, like all these. 2018’s fragrance leads to a supple, silky palate with a bright acidic line & lingering apricot finish. In youth, gains in harmony with decanting, but best in a good few years.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2020, 4.5* (93/100)
‘Produced from an old vine single vineyard in Montagu, the 2018 Chenin Blanc represents another great success for the vintage. The aromatics boast mineral laden notes of wet stones, crushed granite, grey slate with dried hay, green pears and tangerine peel. The palate shows a fine harmonious balance with plenty of subtle complexity of pineapple pastille, green apple, crunchy white peach and a pithy stony mineral veneer. It will be interesting to see if the wine moves away from a mineral, lighter weight textural precision towards a more fleshy, glycerol expression after a few years in bottle. Either way, this is a serious top shelf, grown up effort that will have the loyal Chenin collectors scrambling to burying precious bottles in their cellars.’ – Greg Sherwood MW, 95/100 (Dec 2019)
‘Unlike the Patatsblanc, this is a pure Chenin Blanc, or Steen if you prefer, rather than a blend, sourced from a 34-year-old block on slate soils. Focused, tight and very mineral, this was a little closed when I tasted it, with leesy, fennel and citrus flavours and a wet stone undertone. 2020-25.’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 93/100
