About this Item
Often described as the South African equivalent of a Grand Cru or First Growth, Kanonkop Estate is situated on the Simonsberg mountain slopes on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. Owned by the fourth generation Krige family,
The Cabernet Sauvignon forms part of the 3-tiered, reds only fine offering under the Kanonkop label. Renowned for decades of ageing, Kanonkop’s Cabernet Sauvignon is austere when young and ages with grace.

‘The 1989 Cabernet Sauvignon has a ripe, fairly lactic bouquet with mocha and dark chocolate notes shrouding the core of red fruit. The palate is balanced, perhaps with a slight cork taint? A second bottle is fresher, thankfully without TCA, with more vibrant red fruit, raspberry and crushed strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy raspberry, Tayberry and a pinch of white pepper. Noticeably, quite Bordeaux-like towards the finish, with a touch of mocha on the aftertaste. This 34-year-old continues to give drinking pleasure.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 90/100 (May 2023)
‘12.2% alcohol. Dense and structured with sweet raspberry and cherry fruit with a hint of spice. This is fresh and direct with lovely acidity. Blackcurrant on the palate with nice acidity and a fine, spicy focus. Still has a sense of youth, despite its age.’’ – Wineanorak.com, 96/100 (Jul 2023)
Cellar Tracker Score - 92.5/100
