Cape Heritage - Red Wines
About the SessionThe Cape Heritage Red Wine Session features 25 lots from The Tabernacle – the famous underground cellar in Stellenbosch that houses some of South Africa’s most spectacular vinous historical treasures. All the lots from The Tabernacle have been recorked; each bottle was opened for inspection, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, and Strauss & Co fine wine specialist Higgo Jacobs along with Amorim tasted and assessed each wine. The wines were topped up with wine from the same vintage, recorked and resealed, all under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks.

Established in 1791 by Philippus Wolvaart and his wife, Margaretha, they laid the foundations for future success on a farm situated between the Berg and Palmiet rivers. Critics Ratings
'Beautiful bright red colour with touches of brown – what a colour for a 60 – year old wine! The nose is a beautiful surprise of flavours. A mature wine, still fresh and with harmonious flavours of dried fruit against the background of red fruit, spice, walnuts and toffee. On the palate is a great succession of all the flavours from the nose – here the wine is smooth and soft, with an astonishing freshness. So much fruit and spice with a creamy and nutty mouthfeel. It just stays on the palate backed up by the lovely acidity that has kept the wine in decent shape for the past 60 years. It was a rare opportunity to taste such an exceptional wine.' - Bennie Howard CWM (Mar 2024)
'Beautiful packaging, dating from pre-SFW era. Lovely auction item. Cloudy brick red appearance. The nose has caramelised red berries and baked plums with a hint of full cream sherry. The wine is completely mature, but stable in this condition. Like a fine liqueur – rich, spicy and complex.' - Higgo Jacobs (2024)
