About this Item

2017 Steen
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Patatsfontein is a winemaking venture formed by Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, fund manager Henk Kotze and Fritz Schoon – ‘Master’ baker of Schoon De Companje in Stellenbosch. Reenen's accomplished hand and ever-increasing skills are especially impressive considering his young age. He's possibly our finest new-generation winemaker at present and his latest releases are just epic! Their 2014 Steen was Tim Atkin's White Wine Discovery of the Year and changed the status quo of what can be achieved in a region essentially known for sweet Muscadel.

This unique wine is made from an old single vineyard situated 600m above sea level in the Montagu mountains planted on Karoo slate and shale. Today it is one of South Africa’s greatest Chenin Blancs.

Critics Ratings

‘From a single-vineyard in Montagu, one of the least showy and assertive of the Cape’s really fine Chenins. 2017 all subtle, complex allusion, working through the gentle persuasion of its peachy, citric, floral finesse. Silky texture, with tenderly penetrative acidity.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2019, 4.5* (93/100)

‘These 34-year-old vineyards are located at 560 metres and produce a remarkable Chenin Blanc from a little-known wine region. Stony, fresh and bone dry, it’s sappy and dense, with notes of honey, fresh bread and citrus fruit. 2018-23.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 95/100
