Cape Heritage - Red Wines
About the SessionThe Cape Heritage Red Wine Session features 25 lots from The Tabernacle – the famous underground cellar in Stellenbosch that houses some of South Africa’s most spectacular vinous historical treasures. All the lots from The Tabernacle have been recorked; each bottle was opened for inspection, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, and Strauss & Co fine wine specialist Higgo Jacobs along with Amorim tasted and assessed each wine. The wines were topped up with wine from the same vintage, recorked and resealed, all under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks.

About this Item
Believed to be South Africa’s oldest red blend, Chateau Libertas was established by Dr William Charles Winshaw in 1932 to introduce a lightly wooded dry red blend. It has been produced every year since. A unique blend of Cinsaut, Cabernet Sauvignon and later Pinotage, vintages such as 1940, 57 and 61 are remarkably composed and revered today, especially in 750ml bottle.
The 1970 is medium-bodied, pure-fruited and elegant, aging into a true South African icon.
This wine has been checked and re-corked by Amorim cork under supervision of auction curator Higgo Jacobs, assuring provenance, quality and long life. Seal codes bc-979774, Cz-302106 can be traced on Amorim Recorking Directory

Critics Ratings
'Caramel plus nutty, earthy notes on the nose. Broad, smooth textured and easy going on the palate. Primary fruit has all gone and this is very tertiary but quite comforting to drink.' - Christian Eedes (Apr 2022)
'Impressive longevity from this cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cinsault. Complex, balsamic and fully mature with notes of tobacco leaf, rose petal and wild mushroom, fine-grained, detailed tannins and a core of summer pudding fruit.' - Higgo Jacobs (2022)
