About this Item

2008 Clos de la Roche
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

The family-run Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy's oldest and most revered domaines. They own many Grand Cru plots in Gevrey-Chambertin as well as part of the highly sought-after Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques vineyard. Established in the early 20th Century by Armand Rousseau, the domaine initially owned small parcels throughout Gevrey-Chambertin. Over the next century, under both Armand Rousseau and his son Charles, who took over the reins in 1959, the domaine acquired various Grand Cru vineyards in Charmes, Mazis and Mazoyères-Chambertin, culminating in a plot in Le Chambertin itself in 1994. Careful winemaking, which allows for terroir-expression, the sparing use of oak and old vines, all make for elegant and pure wines that are built for long ageing.

Critics Ratings

'More tannin and minerality than the Gevreys. Sweet fruitcake aroma but without any raisining, it is just a light spiciness. Not sure this bottle it is totally clean on the palate – a little bit hard, so this score may be a on the mean side if you get a better bottle. Certainly firmer and more savoury tannin structure but very fine grained.' - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Apr 2011)

'Pale-medium red. Musky cherry, fresh herbs, brown spices and menthol on the nose and palate; more primary than the Mazy-Chambertin. Then sweeter and larger-scaled but backward today and showing a medicinal austerity. I like this wine's intensity of flavor and palate presence. Finishes with a broad, fine dusting of tannins that spread out to saturate the palate and leave the taste buds vibrating.' - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 90+/100 (Mar 2011)

‘A surprisingly high-toned nose of cranberry and raspberry trimmed in a bit of warm earth introduces very forward yet precise flavors that are quite round and supple yet deliver excellent authority and impressive depth on the balanced and lingering finish. This is not a big example or even especially muscular but it's harmonious and should age well.’ – Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 90-93/100 (Jan 2010)

'New leather, black tea, and bright cherry and plum scent Rousseau’s 2008 Clos de La Roche, which comes to the palate bright and with tart chew of fruit skins and smokiness of black tea serving for invigoration in a finish of impressive persistence. Less exuberant and multi-faceted today than the corresponding Mazy, this also displays more aggressive – faintly gum-numbing – tannins than the several wines that preceded it in the present line-up.' - David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate (Jun 2010)
