About this Item

2003 Clos de Vougeot
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Domaine Méo-Camuzet is one of Burgundy’s star properties and is known for its concentrated, rich and serious wines. Until 30 years ago, most of the domaine's vineyards were leased out and the wine was sold to négociants. The domaine only began bottling in 1985 and the various sharecropping agreements, including one with Henri Jayer, have all come to an end. Today, Jean-Nicolas Méo and Christian Faurois, a former sharecropper turned right-hand man, manage the domaine and produce some of the Côte d'Or’s finest wines. The domaine now proudly holds 2.5 hectares of Grands Crus and 8 hectares in some of the finest Premier Cru sites in Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée. Most of the vineyards are farmed organically.

Clos de Vougeot is one of the most famous Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, located in the Côte de Nuits. It is renowned for producing powerful and age-worthy red wines, characterized by their depth, structure, and complexity. The vineyard's terroir, consisting of limestone-rich soils and optimal sun exposure, contributes to the wines' unique expression of the Pinot Noir grape.

Critics Ratings

‘The 2003 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru now sports a thin brick rim, yet the nose is remarkably fresh considering the heat of the growing season: vivid red cherries, raspberry preserve, leather and minerals. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, perhaps the warmth of that season rendering the tannins a little tough and leathery. Touches of black truffle and smoke develop towards the confit-like finish where I find it just lacks a soupçon of freshness. But overall, this is much better than I expected. Tasted at the Clos de Vougeot retrospective at Clos de Vougeot.’ - Neal Martin, Vinous, 90/100 (Jun 2018)

‘A fruit bomb, this is packed with cassis, plum, violet and mineral notes with freshness and extremely fine tannins. It builds and builds on the palate with intensity and vibrance. Fine length. It's not your typical Clos de Vougeot, but you can't deny its appeal. Best from 2008 through 2025.’ - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 96/100 (May 2006)

‘This is even fresher still if not as complex with an elegant nose of red fruit, earth, plum and leather that complement ripe, sappy and intense mouth coating flavors that seem to be the distilled essence of cassis. The underlying tannins are ripe, quite firm and almost completely buried and this finishes with a subtle hint of mocha and coffee.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com (Jan 2005)
