About this Item
signed and dated 1958; inscribed 'After the painting: Refugees from the Drought-Stricken Zone by Candido Portinari (Brazil)' on the reverse
Notes
"I probably came across Candido Portinari's name sometime in the 1950s, maybe in some art magazine or maybe Life magazine, I can't remember the details after all these years. But I know I was greatly impressed which is the reason I thought of doing a little copy of his painting for myself. This little oil painting was never exhibited and so has never been seen by the public. In 1976 I spent a few days in New York. In that time I went to the UNO headquarters and saw a Portinari mural there, a gift, I think from the Brazilian nation. A great deal of my life has been engaged at looking at and being amazed at what so many various artists, both famous and unknown, have produced throughout the centuries"
