Notes

Marié Stander, a portrait and figurative artist born in George, holds a BA Fine Arts degree from the University of Stellenbosch, graduating in 1986. She draws inspiration primarily from the people she knows and cares for in her rural community of Jamestown, near Stellenbosch, where the rich culture, joy, and hardships of her surroundings have influenced her work for over 25 years.

Stander's career highlights include ten solo exhibitions, with a retrospective in 2010 at the Sanlam Headquarters in Cape Town, where her works are part of their collection. She has published two books, Onse Mense and Onse Mense 2, sponsored by Sanlam. Stander has also achieved notable recognition in the National Portrait Award competition, securing a position in the Top 40 for six portraits and fourth place for one in 2023. Her portrait of Desmond Tutu was commissioned by Tygerberg Hospital, and she has participated as a soloist at various art festivals and fairs. With numerous works in private and corporate collections locally and abroad, her art has been featured in national and international publications, and she has hosted portrait workshops in France and Tuscany. Additionally, she runs the 'Marie Stander School of Art,' where she teaches 50 students.
