Ydi Coetsee Carstens (b.1990 Stellenbosch) obtained her MA in Fine Arts at Stellenbosch University in 2015 with an exchange component in Kampala. Her current practice focuses on figurative painting. Growing up in a mission church where her father served during Apartheid played a significant role in her upbringing. Her work reflects primarily on place and material culture in the context of Africa's entanglement with the West. She had her first solo exhibition in 2018 and her second in 2022. She was a Top 40 finalist in the SA Portrait Awards in 2017 and 2023 and a Sasol New Signatures finalist in 2015.
