Notes

JP Meyer was born in 1960 and grew up in the Free State provence of South Africa. After military service he joined SAA (South African Airways) where he worked as an international flight attendant for 15 years. In 1996 he swapped corporate life for that of a full-time art student at the Foundation School of Art in Cape Town, graduating four years later with as Diploma of Fine Art (Painting) Cum Laude. His first solo exhibition was held at the Association of Visual Arts in Cape Town in 2003 and since then he has mounted 13 solo exhibitions and 11 joint exhibitions. His work features in the SASOL, DIDATA, Rand Merchant Bank, Hollards, Nandos UK and McMillan Publishing collections. Meyer currently lives and works in Porterville.

“My work is a visual dialogue between contemporary culture, ancient mythologies and the playful energy of comic strips and colouring books. I use the quick-drying properties of acrylic paint to fuel a spontaneous and intuitive painting process from which unexpected narratives and symbols emerge transforming the canvas into a realm of endless possibilities. The completed work is always an unanticipated surprise.”—JP Meyer.
