Notes
Cobus Haupt (b. 1976) is a prominent bronze sculptor who earned his B-Tech in Fine Arts from the Pretoria Technikon in 1998. Renowned for his unique approach, Haupt intentionally leaves flaws and imperfections in his sculptures, emphasizing the casting process and celebrating the human figure's inherent fragility and individuality. His work often explores themes of history, popular culture, and tradition, resulting in tactile and playful pieces that invite engagement. Haupt has received several accolades, including first prize in the 2001 PPC Sculpture Competition and the Kempton Park/Tembisa Metropolitan Fine Arts Competition. His public commissions include a sculpture of Walter Rabusana at Fountains Valley, Pretoria, and a sculpture of JT Gumede in Pietermaritzburg. Haupt undertakes all aspects of the sculpting process himself, from mold-making to casting, drawing inspiration from live models and incorporating found objects to create compelling assemblages that resonate with his personal history and artistic journey.
