Notes
Anton Kannemeyer is a South African artist known for his satirical, black humour comics. He studied graphic design at Stellenbosch University, where he met his frequent collaborator, Conrad Botes. Together, the two – who also go by the pseudonyms Joe Dog (Kannemeyer) and Konradski (Botes) – began the acerbic comic magazine Bitterkomix in 1992. This series pokes fun at the stereotypical parts of Afrikaner culture. In 2005, he began his Alphabet of Democracy series, which critiques the politics and society of post-apartheid South Africa. While he is best known for works in the aforementioned vein, Kannemeyer also creates intricate drawings of clusters of trees found on the slopes of Table Mountain.
Kannemeyer’s work has been included in numerous publications and is held in the permanent collections of places such as MoMA, New York City, NY, USA; SFMOMA, San Francisco, CA, USA; Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town; and Johannesburg Art Gallery.
