Notes

Hermann Niebuhr, born in Johannesburg in 1972, graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (with distinction in History of Art) from Rhodes University in 1993. He received several scholarships throughout his studies and co-founded the Lilian Road Studios in Fordsburg, where he taught art. In 2020, he moved to De Rust in the Klein Karoo, where he now works as a full-time artist.

Niebuhr has exhibited both locally and internationally, with his work extensively collected. His recent series features portraits of writers, musicians, and academics, created by documenting a stack of books that the sitters consider essential to their intellectual identity, using the pile as a stand-in for the person.
