Kupa, born in Molteno in 1981 and currently based in Johannesburg, is a celebrated South African artist known for his dynamic body of work that spans painting, sculpture, and installation. He holds a National Diploma in Fine Art from Walter Sisulu University and played a key role in revitalizing the Molteno Museum between 2009 and 2011. Kupa has received several prestigious awards, including the Ann Bryant Young Artist of the Year (2010), the Cassirer Welz Award (2013), and the Eastern Cape Provincial Cultural Award for Visual Art (2018). His work is part of prominent collections such as The Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art, the South African Art Bank, and the Spier Art Collection. Kupa has exhibited widely, with recent shows including Soil (2024) at Artyli Gallery in Johannesburg, and In Search of the Birds From the Sea (2023) at Spier Arts Trust in Cape Town. He has participated in residencies in Iran, the USA, and South Africa, with an upcoming Nando’s residency in 2024.
