Notes
Juria le Roux was born in Zimbabwe in 1963 and obtained a B.A. in Creative Arts specialising in Jewellery Design and Manufacture from the University of Stellenbosch in 1986. She founded Amulet, a co-operative workshop, in Cape Town in 1987 and has been active in solo and group exhibitions since then. Her impactful solo exhibition, "Elegie" / "Reeksmoord," showcased 50 portraits of murder victims in South Africa, gaining significant attention as a work of tribute and protest. While primarily known as a portrait artist, Juria has recently explored themes of heritage, land ownership, and environmental crises through paintings that symbolise fire and water—elements that are both nurturing and destructive. Her work addresses pressing issues, including the effects of war and the Anthropocene. Notable achievements include multiple Sanlam Portrait Award nominations, with her piece "Inheritance" included in the 2019 Top 40 collection and "Clusterfuck" addressing the devastating impacts of cluster bombs.
