Notes

Thomas Buttersworth was a prolific marine artist whose work was deeply influenced by his experiences as a sailor during the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815). While serving, he created numerous paintings, including notable depictions of the Battle of St. Vincent and various Mediterranean scenes, dated, 1797, 1799, and 1800. After returning to London, he produced a remarkable body of paintings and watercolours, eventually earning the title of Marine Painter for the Dutch East India Company.
