Notes

Richard Estes is an American artist, best known for his photorealist paintings of cityscapes. Estes renders images sourced from photographs with precise and nearly invisible brushstrokes. Born on May 14, 1932, Estes graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1956, before moving to New York where he began his career in advertising. He had his first solo exhibition in 1968 at the Allen Stone Gallery, which allowed him to make the transition into his career as an artist. Recently, he has utilised digital software to create collages of manipulated and altered imagery to use as the basis for his paintings. The artist’s works are currently held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, among others.
