Notes

Dame Elisabeth Jean Frink was an English sculptor and printmaker. Born in Thurlow, Suffolk, Frink studied at the Guildford School of Art in 1949 and the Chelsea School of Art until 1953. After completing her studies, she became part of a post-war group of British sculptors dubbed the Geometry of Fear School. Frink’s subject matter included men, birds, dogs, horses and religious motifs drawing in archetypes of masculine strength and aggression. She represented Great Britain in the 1952 Venice Biennale, where she exhibited works with rugged, brutal and often contorted surfaces that reflected the post-war mood of the time. Frink had a long career, marked with many career-defining moments. She died in 1993 at the age of 62, leaving a legacy with her work.
