Critics Ratings

‘A blockbuster and a terrific example of Chateauneuf du Pape in a more challenging and irregular vintage is the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape. Deep purple to the rim with a gloriously flamboyant nose of black raspberry jam, kirsch, smoke, and licorice, the wine has dazzling concentration, pushes ripeness to the limit (note the flavors of figs) but pulls back with impressive purity and balance as well as plenty of force and resistance. This is a supple, opulent style of Chateauneuf du Pape to drink over the next decade or more.’ – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Feb 2006)

‘Deep red. Meaty, powerful and deep on the nose, conveying a sense of great ripeness and power; notes of dark, roasted berries and grilled meat. Rich and thick in the mouth, with dense blackberry and plum compote flavors. This is unctuous to the point of oily, and has 2003 written all over it. But there is also good energy and focus for such an outsized wine.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 91/100 (Jan 2006)

‘Alain Jaume bought the Domaine Grand Veneur in 1979, and its reputation has been steadily increasing. This is a superbly perfumed wine, with great pure black currant fruits, layers of dry tannins and a firm, structured aftertaste. Imported by Kysela Père et Fils.’ – Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 92/100 (Dec 2005)

‘Loaded with dark currant and blackberry fruit, this has sinew, muscle and flesh along with tar, grilled beef and mineral notes pumping through the finish. Gets darker as it sits in the glass too. Best from 2006 through 2020.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Oct 2005)
