Critics Ratings
Rustenberg John X Merriman 1999:
‘64% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc. A warm vintage that was highly rated: high yields but good concentration and structure. Quite rich, dark and tarry with a subtle herby edge. It’s smooth and dark and classy. The palate is smooth and spicy with a nice earthy edge to the dark fruits. Developing nicely with good structure. Very good/excellent’ – Jamie Goode, Wineanorak.com (Dec 2005)
‘A blend of 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, the medium to dark ruby-colored, controversial 1999 John X. Merriman sports a nose reminiscent of freshly snapped green beans. While its aromas worried me that I'd find it unripe, this wine's lush, broad, rich personality put that fear to rest. sweet plums, blackberries, and cassis are layered throughout this satin-textured, medium-bodied wine's character. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.’ – Pierre Rovani, Wine Advocate (Feb 2003)
Rustenberg John X Merriman 2003:
'A serious wine with real aging potential, this Bordeaux blend from on-the-radar vintner Adi Badenhorst marries muscular strength with a softer, savvy style. Smoke, mocha, berry and spice create a seamless mosaic of flavor, while firmly structured tannins offer an assertive edge. The wine has all the hallmarks of a classic Bordeaux with a few added exotic touches, making it a great gift for wine lovers who already have everything.' - Susan Kostrzewa, Wine Enthusiast, 91/100 (Dec 2007)
Rustenberg John X Merriman 2005:
'Modern classic’ bdx-style blend; 03, 05 honoured as such, taking trophy on Calyon competition. Latter vintage a real charmer. Entices with fresh, ripe fruit perfume, silky sleekness, retraining ripe tannins. French oaked, 50% new, 20 months.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2008, 4.5*
‘54% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Cab Franc, 3% Malbec. Platter 2008 4.5 star rating. Blackish crimson. Lead pencils and concentration and real integrity. Underpriced. Acidity a little obvious but a good drink for the money. GV’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (2008)
